With his title as "Boxing Champion of Israel" and a one-way ticket to New York, Merhav Moher, twenty-two, takes off for the United States. Leaving anxious parents behind, friends, and more than a few fans, he goes to realize his dream, against all odds, of becoming boxing champion of the world. Except that towards the peak of the track, the unexpected happens, and his big plans get messed up.
MY CHAMPION presents the story of the golden boy of Israeli boxing, from his first steps in New York, alone and confused, counting every dollar so he can have enough to eat, to his accomplishments in boxing matches all over the USA, and the exclusive world championship match in Atlanta, which unexpectedly turns into a fight for his identity, as a boxer and as a person.
In an unmediated documentary, the film follows Merhav, who is working tirelessly, far away from home, to fulfill his dream. He works out for hours daily in "Gleason's" gym, in Brooklyn, with the legendary trainer, Hector Rocca, who's turned out a number of world champions and has decided to bet on Merhav as his next.
Meanwhile, in Kfar Saba, Merhav's mother, Talila, toss and turn every night. When he was still in Israel, she would call out to him from the audience that he apologizes to his opponents for knocking them out. Now, all she can do is grit their teeth and long for the day he hangs up his gloves. Throughout the film his mother is torn between her wish to be supportive of their beloved son's dream and the unending worry that preoccupies them because of the dangerous business he's chosen.
After a major triumph in an important match in Las Vegas, and a few more matches acroos the US, Merhav gets to the most important fight of his career, his first fight in the world championship. He emerges in the ring wrapped in an Israeli flag.
This match, however, also turns into an unexpected and painful turning point.
